How to Find New Clients While Learning about Your Target Market

I’ve recently rediscovered a time-honored technique for finding new clients. It not only allows me to find those who are interested in what I offer, but it also lets me learn about the concerns and problems of my target market. I can find new clients and simultaneously get information that will help me sell to future clients even better. After all, if I know what my target market has problems with and I come up with a solution to those problems, that will make my offering that much more desirable to those I sell to.

Did I mention that it’s given me better results, for less money, in a shorter amount of time, than any other form of marketing I’ve tried? read more…

3 Steps to Effective Web Site Marketing and Promotion

I get calls on a regular basis from business owners who ask me if I could “take a quick look over their site and see what I think.” This usually translates into “We’d like to make sure there aren’t any major, blatant problems with our web site before we bring more people to it.” It may be a new site or it may be an established site about to experience increased traffic from a new marketing campaign. Regardless, your business web site needs to work well with your marketing and promotion efforts.

I’m happy to spend 10 minutes on the phone giving anyone my thoughts about their web site (feel free to contact me), but there are a few things I usually touch on no matter the situation. The top three are…

An Introduction to Web Analytics

If you’re like most of the American population, the term “Web Analytics” sounds about as interesting as a lengthy discussion on the National Debt. I doubt anyone can turn the National Debt an interesting article, but Web Analytics is actually a very fascinating topic if you can get past the name. In fact, if you follow what I say below and start monitoring your web site statistics, you may very well find yourself spending too much time playing around with all the interesting information you can find about your web site. Even if you don’t find the information interesting (I very well may be the only one who finds web analytics fun), the possibility of fine-tuning your web site into a money machine should catch your attention.

So what kind of information can you find about your web site once you’ve got web analytics enabled, you may ask? The possibilities are endless, but here are some of the main metrics you’ll want to know…

(Without Firing Gerbils Out of a Cannon)

Outpost.com shot a gerbil out of a cannon during a Super Bowl commercial. A while later they showed a pack of wild wolves attacking a marching band. They certainly got the attention of people watching the Super Bowl commercials, but what were they trying to accomplish? Did it work?

In this world of advertising, businesses need to know how to properly and effectively grab the attention of the the people they market to. If done wrong, your marketing efforts will be wasted. How can you effectively grab the attention of the people you hope to make your customers?

You’ll know the answer to that (and the result of Outpost.com’s commercials) by the end of this article.

Before finding my calling as a web guy, I worked in the position of security guard. I can’t say it was very interesting, but it’s one of the more relaxed jobs I’ve ever had because most of what you do involves #1: standing there looking alert so that anyone who plans on doing something bad sees you and decides not to make what he is doing obvious and #2: making the employees feel safe because they have somebody alert looking there to save them in case of emergencies.

Unfortunately I’m not much help in emergencies because I tend to throw even sensible people in a panic during times of disaster, but I make a great visual deterrent when I wasn’t falling asleep. I say falling asleep because I worked the graveyard shift. I really enjoyed this schedule because I worked at night, would sleep in the morning, and do whatever in the evenings. If I didn’t work a particular night, I could hang out with my friends and watch them struggle to stay awake at four in the morning.

I now present the first edition of “Doctored Baby Photos”.

Each of these photos has undergone a makeover, a combination of photoshop and Jarom having too much free time on his hands. The results, though frightening, are displayed here in hopes that the decent people of America will call the proper authorities and put a stop to it.

Why You’d be Crazy Not to Start an Email Newsletter

When anyone comes to your web site it is because they are interested in something you have on your site. Whether it’s a product you sell, information you provide, or some sort of fleeting curiosity that brings them to your site for five seconds and then they hit the back button, you have their attention for that brief period of time.

What do you do during that brief period of time? If all you do is sell them a product, give them information, or let them hit the back button, you’re throwing away tons of money. You’re missing out on one of the most productive, effective, and easy to implement marketing tools available. The tool is email, and every business should be collecting email addresses from their site visitors.

Humor: Beware the Cafeteria Ice Cream

August 31, 2006 8:47 am by Jarom Adair

My freshman year in college I was in the local student cafeteria, eating dinner with a couple people when I get this strange call from deep inside my inner-being that gently throbs the word “ice cream…ice cream…” over and over again until it overrides my sub-conscience sense of survival that usually kicks in whenever I contemplate second helpings of campus food. So I get up and walk trance-like over to the ice cream machine and squirt a little into a bowl, and I top it with some chocolate sauce and creamy marshmallow goop. So far so good, right?
